Hinshaw, PhD, Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and Vice-Chair for Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, discussed his new book, The ADHD Explosion..Myths, Medication, Money and Today's Push for Performance, that deals with attention - deficit/ hyperactivity disorder, one of the most controversial and misunderstood medical conditions today.

The Friends and HBO screened, Olive Kitteridge, based on the Pulitzer-Prize winning novel by Elizabeth Strout and starring Francis McDormand. Following the film, screenwriter Jane Anderson and Dr. Andrew Leuchter, Professor of Psychiatry at the Semel Institute, engaged in a lively discussion of the nature of mental illness and its depiction in the miniseries.

Hidden Pictures explores the struggles faced by the 450 million people living with mental illness worldwide. Through deeply personal stories involving bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety in India, China, Africa, France, and the US, the film reveals a global epidemic of silence around mental illness. Dr. Delaney Ruston will discussed the obstacles these people face in receiving mental health care and how global mental health is receiving increasing attention.

Dr. Michael Gitlin, Director of the Adult Division of Psychiatry, Director of the Mood Disorders Clinic in the UCLA Dept of Psychiatry and Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA join Ms. Garey to discuss bi-polar disorder.

The Friends of the Semel Institute and their guests savored a delicious “mind-healthy” lunchtime feast at the Food and Friends at Bouchon event on Wednesday, April 9th. A capacity crowd of 130 guests gathered at Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bistro in Beverly Hills in support of The Friends of Semel’s Scholar Program, which awards grants to brilliant young scientists doing research to better understand the mind and brain and develop new and improved treatments for mental and neurological disorders.
